The wet sand sound. You know that specific squelch when feet hit packed wet sand after running through the dry stuff? This game has that. Not literally, there's no sand audio, but the way the mouse drags across the lifeguard tower railing, the slight resistance before the camera pans down to the blonde in the red bikini. She's coughing up seawater and the animation loops. Three coughs then a pause then three more. I watched that loop for way too long because the chest physics during the cough. Jesus. The bounce has this delayed recoil that doesn't quite match real physics but honestly real physics is boring. Who wants realistic buoyancy when you can have whatever this is.
The rescue scene is the whole game basically. You pull her from the water which is just a still image of waves that don't move. The water is the most static thing I've ever seen in a browser game. It's almost aggressive how still it is. Like the ocean just gave up. But then you're doing CPR and the clicking rhythm is weirdly satisfying. Click click click on her chest and the breathing meter fills up. I don't know why there's a meter for breathing when she's clearly breathing in the animation loop. The game doesn't care about this contradiction and neither should you.
Malibu beach is mentioned in the title but it's just sand and one palm tree. One. Singular palm tree. The lifeguard tower has a Malibu sticker on it that's pixelated if you zoom in which you can't officially do but browser zoom exists. The blonde's bikini is more orange than red on my screen and I spent way too long in my display settings trying to fix it before realizing the game just looks like that. Her tanlines are visible when you move to the second position. There's a second position. The CPR transitions into something else if you keep clicking. The tactile thing here is the mouse button resistance on my cheap Logitech. It has this slight stick before the click registers and that microsecond of anticipation adds something the developer definitely didn't intend. The lifeguard character has no face. Not like a horror thing, they just didn't render one. You're a faceless hero and honestly that's the most relatable male protagonist I've experienced this month.
