The engine on this thing is a mess and I love it. Unity Player, obviously, not that WebGL wrapper some of these browser games try to pull where it takes forever to buffer. Nope, this one just hurls you into a low-fi ghetto with zero antialiasing, like someone forgot to toggle the post-processing stack. Shadows are jagged enough to cut yourself on. Runs at a buttery 60fps on my rig though, no frame drops even when the scene floods with those DMX style loops. The sound design is something else, raw uncut boom bap just bleeding through the speakers. Audio compression is terrible, sounds like a 128kbps rip from LimeWire circa 2003, which totally fits the grimy visual aesthetic.
So you click around, mugging sleeping dudes in alleys, drinking at bars with a UI that feels like it was coded on a calculator. Then you luck into the "get laid with some bitches" part. Right. The Erza Scarlet insert shows up in this backroom, a stripper setup that's way too on the nose for Fairy Tail fanfic. Her outfit texture mapping glitches when the animation loops, the big boobs jiggle physics are direct copy-paste from some public domain Unity asset, I'd recognize that sine wave pattern anywhere. It's jank. Pure, uncut jank. But the multiple choices mechanic during the scene is surprisingly responsive, no button delay, the clickable zones are massive so you can't miss them. You pick a dialogue option, or an action, and the sprite morphs into a new pose with a polygon count that suddenly triples for no good reason, like the dev just imported a high-poly model for the explicit close ups then forgot to LOD the rest of the body.
This is a criminal optimization strategy. My GPU utilization spikes 40% for 15 seconds then crashes back down, the frame pacing gets all shanky, and I just... don't care. The facial expression changes are genuinely decent. For a game that looks like it was textured with MS Paint, they nailed the blank-eyed hentai stare turning into something a bit more feral. Erza's hair clips through her shoulders constantly, a standing bug they'll never fix.
God, I wish there was a way to skip the bar section entirely. Just a menu, direct to the scenes. Because walking back through that alley for the fifth time to trigger the RNG flag for the criminal encounter, the one where the color grading suddenly shifts to this sickly green, that part is a slog. The rendering pipeline has no right to swap shaders mid-scene like that, it's like a visual hiccup. This game is held together with string and a dream, and it delivers exactly what that description promises. No more. No less.
