The save system in Beta Life, man, it’s this weird point and click thing where you literally drag a floppy disk icon onto a calendar date. First time I overwrote Tuesday because I thought I was loading. Tuesday was gone. All those choices, that one party where I accidentally started a drinking contest with the RA, poof. The game didn’t care. It’s got this sandbox vibe, college freshman, you pick your stats at the start like some half-assed RPG, then wander around campus clicking on stuff. There’s a puzzle in the chemistry lab that unlocks a scene with a goth student if you mix the right beaker colors. Took me twenty minutes of trial and error, and the reward was her just insulting my technique while undoing her belt. Worth it.
Combat is turn based but it’s not fighting, it’s like... social combat. You get into these arguments at frat parties and have to select from moves like “Sarcastic Retort” or “Awkward Compliment.” Losing a debate means you get kicked out, miss the hookup scene in the basement. Winning against the jock character, this guy named Chad who’s literally just named Chad, lets you crash in his room and find his hidden stash of polaroids. The whole Dikson thing, the game keeps pushing you to become this ultimate party legend, but the puzzles get in the way. One minute you’re solving a sliding tile puzzle to fix the DJ’s laptop, next minute two students are dragging you into a closet for a threesome because you picked the right dialogue option three days ago.
The art style, I don’t know, it’s unpolished in a way that almost feels deliberate. Character portraits shift quality scene to scene. Sometimes a hand looks like a claw. During one adventure segment where you explore the abandoned admin building, the point and click hotspots are so tiny I kept clicking a desk lamp instead of the girl’s skirt. She just stood there, frozen, waiting. The sandbox means you can ignore the main story for weeks of in-game time, just grind charisma by attending lectures, but the party scenes are where the explicit content actually lives. There’s a student council election subplot I still haven’t finished because I got sidetracked by a puzzle involving a stolen mascot costume and the cheerleading squad. No idea if becoming president matters. Probably not.
