I keep coming back to the therapist angle with these games. Not because I'm one but because I need one after playing Empire of Heroes. What does it say about me that I'm genuinely invested in whether Captain Voltage can maintain a relationship while his ex keeps showing up during alien invasions? The game asks this question too, sort of, between scenes where you're trying to figure out if your powers are glitching or if that's just what happens when the villain you're fighting used to be your mentor.
The combat is surprisingly not terrible. You've got these power combinations that actually matter for once, not just "click the stronger button" bullshit. I lost a fight because I was distracted by a character's outfit. Her ass literally caused a game over screen. That's not a complaint. That's me appreciating the attention to anatomical detail that most games phone in. The proportions are ridiculous but consistent, which is harder than it sounds.
The writing swings wildly between genuinely funny comic book parody and moments where I forgot I was supposed to be horny. There's this whole subplot about registration laws for superpowers that's... actually thought out? And then someone's tits are out and I remember what site I downloaded this from. The humor lands more than it misses, which surprised me. The romance paths feel like they were written by someone who's read too many comics and not enough dating advice columns, and I mean that as a compliment. These characters are disasters with godlike abilities trying to figure out if love is real or just pheromones from that one villain's mind control gas.
I wish the menu navigation wasn't so clunky though. Small thing but when you're trying to get back to a specific scene and the save system fights you, that's when I start questioning my life choices. Not enough to stop playing obviously. Just enough to be annoyed between faps.
